JIM SHUPE
PRESIDENT
Jim began his apprenticeship in August 2001 and, since graduating in 2006, has been an active and dedicated member of Local Union 420. He consistently volunteers his time on picket lines, political phone banks, Election Day efforts, labor walks, and pro-union rallies.
Jim is honored to have served Local Union 420 in various leadership roles, including as a member of the Sick Committee, Finance Committee, Bylaws Committee, Negotiating Committee, and Executive Board. He currently serves as Vice President, demonstrating his strong leadership and commitment to the union. Additionally, Jim represented the union as a delegate at the 2022 and 2024 Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Conventions and the 38th, 39th, and 40th UA National Conventions.
In his community, Jim holds an elected position as co-chairman of Philadelphia’s 66th Ward and remains actively involved. His ongoing engagement with the union and its members has given him a deep understanding of the dedication and leadership required to fulfill the commitments of an elected official and a fellow union member.
Jim currently works for Herman Goldner at Merck Pharmaceutical in Montgomery County, where he is the site Superintendent. He also serves as the Chairman of the Merck Contractor/Trades Safety Council, which meets monthly with Merck’s site management to review policy changes and resolve on-site issues. His leadership in this role ensures a safe and productive work environment.
Jim is seeking members’ support in the upcoming officer election. With his proven leadership skills, loyalty, and relentless work ethic, he will continue to be an asset and a voice for all members of Local Union 420 by serving as your President and as a Trustee. Jim envisions a union that continues to be strong, united, and equipped to face future challenges. He is committed to fostering a collaborative environment where every member's voice is heard and valued, ensuring that the union remains a powerful advocate for members' rights, jurisdiction, and benefits.
Jim's goals for the union include continuing to strengthen the retirement and health funds to secure members' futures and ensuring good wages that reflect the hard work and dedication of every member. He believes that by focusing on these key areas, the union can provide a stable and prosperous future for all its members.
As a first-generation union member, Jim takes great pride in his journey and the opportunities the union has provided him. On a personal note, Jim has been happily married to Peggy for 20 years and is a proud father of two children, Nicolette, 17, and Justin, 15. His family is a constant source of support and inspiration in his life and work. Jim respectfully asks for your support for the office of President to help the union achieve its shared goals and continue to build a better future for all members.
